What it is: Discospondylitis (DS) is an infection of the vertebrae and intervertebral discs in the dog’s spine, usually caused by bacteria. Middle-aged to older large and giant breeds often suffer from the condition.

  • Hind limb weakness

Treatment: Antibiotic therapy can help eradicate the bacterial infection, although surgery may be required to correct the problem in more advanced cases. Spinal surgery is covered by many pet insurance plans, as is the cost of prescription medication.
