Legend has it that the Egyptian Mau is a descendant of the cats that were revered by the ancient pharaohs, though genetic analysis has them originating in Europe.
In any case, their remarkable patterns, keen intelligence, and varied vocalizations make the Mau a special type of cat breed.
These cats love to play and are said to bond deeply with their owners.
Should you Purchase Pet Insurance for your Egyptian Mau Cat?
Maus an average lifespan of 15 years, and seem to be prone to just one congenital disease:
- Leukodystrophy (Krabbe disease): affected kittens suffer from progressive and eventually fatal degeneration of the nervous system that begins at around two months of age. There is no treatment, so be sure to consult with your breeder and vet to ensure that any kitten you acquire is free of the disease.
These cats can be hard to come by; only a few hundred registered kittens are born per year.
They are also uniquely sensitive to anesthetics, and therefore require special handling when health problems occur.
For these reasons, Mau owners will want to consider pet insurance as a way to meet the special needs of their feline treasures.
