Exercise Induced Collapse in Dogs

Exercise Induced Collapse in Dogs

What it is: This genetic condition is most common in Labrador retrievers, resulting in a life-threatening collapse when the dog is engaged in vigorous, strenuous activities or exercise.

  • Muscle weakness
  • Lack of coordination
  • Collapse

Treatment: No cure is available for the condition, but dogs can live normal lives as house pets engaging in mild to moderate exercise. Intense training is off the table, as is any strenuous activity or extreme excitement that lasts as few as five minutes.

Keeping a very close eye on your dog’s health is imperative if he suffers from exercise induced collapse, and many pet insurance policies offer wellness options that make it easy to do just that. Wellness coverage pays for the cost of regular vet checkups and routine procedures designed to maintain optimum health.
