Does Pet Insurance Cover Shots

Vaccinations are extremely important to your pet’s health. They help prevent your pet from contracting and spreading infectious diseases. This ensures that your pet can live a long and happy life without the risk of certain illnesses.

As a pet owner, it is important that you don’t overlook getting the proper vaccines for your pet. If you are concerned about the cost, pet insurance may be able to help you.

Many pet insurance companies offer vaccine coverage as part of wellness coverage, but it is important to look at a company’s policy on vaccine coverage before signing on the dotted line.

Does Pet Insurance Wellness Plans Cover Shots?

Pet insurance is meant to help cover unexpected veterinary costs in case anything happens to your pet.

There are also some pet insurance companies that will sell you coverage to help with expected costs, such as routine vet visits and vaccinations. This is known as wellness coverage, and it is offered by several pet insurance companies.

Wellness coverage is a type of comprehensive coverage that is meant to cover preventative and routine pet expenses. Preventative measures help prevent greater disease later in life, so insurance companies do actually have an incentive to cover these expenses.

Routine vet visits, vaccinations, dental cleanings, and other common costs may be covered under a typical wellness policy.

Types of Vaccines

Vaccines help prepare the immune system to fight off a disease in case it enters the body. They introduce antigens to imitate an infection without actually developing into the disease itself. This causes the body to produce antibodies that can fight off future infections.

Vaccines can prevent disease in your pet, and they can also prevent the spread of disease to other animals. If your dog frequents a dog park, they may be more likely to pick up a disease from other animals.

There is also a possibility that they themselves could spread disease. It is essential to your pet’s health that you properly vaccinate them so that they aren’t at risk of catching or spreading disease.

The different vaccines that an animal needs will differ between dogs and cats.

Core Vaccines for Dogs

Core vaccines for dogs include canine:

  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Hepatitis
  • Rabies

Most vets will also recommend that your dog receives vaccines for leptospirosis and kennel cough.

Core Vaccines for Cats

Core vaccines for cats are:

  • Feline calicivirus
  • Herpesvirus type I
  • Distemper
  • Rabies

Your vet may also recommend vaccines for leukemia virus, Bordetella, and feline immunodeficiency virus.

Pet Insurance Companies that Cover Shots

Here are a few pet insurance companies that cover vaccinations and shots:

Nationwide’s Whole Pet and Wellness plan covers preventative care, including vaccines and shots. This is their most comprehensive plan covering accidents, illnesses, and a range of routine and wellness expenses.

However, it is slightly more expensive than other options, so it may not be the best option for you and your pet.

Nationwide also offers their Pet Wellness Plan separately if you are only interested in covering routine expenses with your pet insurance policy.

This plan will cover vaccines, microchipping, routine visits, and other common costs. It is a more affordable pet insurance plan than their comprehensive coverage, so it is worth considering if you only want routine care covered.

Embrace offers their Wellness Rewards on their Routine Care package, which will cover vaccines and other routine expenses. They give policyholders three different annual payout options.

You can choose to have Embrace cover $250, $450, or $650 of wellness expenses each year.

The only drawback to this package is that it cannot be purchased individually. You must have an existing accident and illness policy in order to add on their Routine Care package.

If you are only concerned with covering routine expenses with your insurance policy, this may not be the policy for you.

Pets Best

Pets Best offers routine care and a pet wellness plan, which will cover vaccines and shots. Their pet wellness plan has two tiers, either of which can be added to a base plan at an additional cost.

The first tier covers vaccines, shots, blood work, dental cleaning, spay/neuter procedures, and other routine expenses. The second tier includes all of the expenses of the first tier, as well as acupuncture, chiropractic care, and other rehab therapies.

Pets Best will pay $30 to $40 towards vaccines each year with no deductible, but the amount they pay will ultimately be dependent on which plan you choose.
