Healthy Paws Coverage

healthy paws reviewHealthy Paws is the only pet insurance company that provides unlimited lifetime benefits with an annual deductible. This means that there is no limit on the number of claims you can file, and no cap on reimbursements. Your pet is covered for any accident or illness, for life. Period.

Their policies cover all accidents and illnesses, and there are no restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions, including cancer. The policy also covers emergency care, hospital stays, and surgeries. All of their plans cover up to 90 % of your veterinary bill and is based on actual costs.

With Healthy Paws, you can go to any licensed veterinarian that you choose. This includes specialists and emergency animal hospitals.  With Healthy Paws, you will have continuous, seamless coverage for the life of the policy.

Healthy Paws’ coverage also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic care.  Alternative therapies can provide that extra care for injured pets or older cats and dogs. They are known to be very helpful for degenerative spine issues, neurologic disc problems, hip dysplasia and cruciate ligament injuries, to name a few.

Hereditary & Congenital Conditions

Healthy Paws policies cover expensive congenital and hereditary conditions, like hip dysplasia and heart defects. Other plans often exclude these from coverage or “include” them in their plans but deny claims after a pet parent has spent thousands in vet bills.

Healthy Paws automatically reimburses congenital and hereditary condition diagnosis and treatment, with no hassle. It’s another important reason why Healthy Paws reviews are the best.

Other Conditions & Treatment

Healthy Paws coverage also includes chronic conditions, like ear infections, allergies, renal failure, and cancer. These are ongoing and costly, but Healthy Paws will never deny a claim for treatment.

When your pet visits the vet for an accident or illness, Healthy Paws pet insurance pays for diagnostic treatment, testing, and prescription medications. If your pet requires surgery, they cover surgery and hospitalization. Puppy stepped on a bee? Emergency visits are included as well.

Additionally, if your pet needs specialist care for an illness like cancer, Healthy Paws coverage is there for that too.

Alternative Care

Healthy Paws is one of the only providers to cover alternative treatments at no additional charge.

Alternative treatments include acupuncture, chiropractor, physical therapy, and hydrotherapy. Other pet insurances charge extra for this type of coverage.

Benefit Limits

Healthy Paws is one of the few insurers that offer policies with no limits or caps, including annual, lifetime, or per incident caps.  While other pet insurance policies offer unlimited benefits, it typically is with their most expensive plans.

With Healthy Paws, the unlimited benefit option is included in their standard plan.

Some providers like Embrace only offer benefits up to $15,000 which can be limiting if your pet needs serious treatment as it is not uncommon for a medical bill to be as high as $20,000.

As with other pet insurance policies, as long as the condition your dog or cat is being treated for is not a pre-existing condition, they will pay even your entire bill, no matter what the cost.  At the facility or doctor of your choice.

Reimbursement Method

An important distinction between Healthy Paws and other providers is the reimbursement method.

Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill. Some plans reimburse you according to a benefit schedule or “usual and customary” vet costs, which is usually based on the national average cost.

Let’s say you paid a $500 vet bill to treat your dog’s ear infection:

  • Your pet insurance reimburses according to a benefit schedule
  • The benefit schedule indicates that $300 is “usual and customary” to treat a dog ear infection
  • You chose 90% reimbursement when you enrolled, so your pet insurance will reimburse you 90% of $300, so $270. But you paid $500. That’s almost half of your out of pocket cost!

With Healthy Paws coverage, you would be reimbursed based on the $500 vet bill: 90% x $500= $450. Now that’s more like it! Makes sense why Healthy Paws insurance reviews are the best, right?

Annual Deductible

Annual deductibles mean that you only have to meet your deductible once per year.

Other plans have per-condition deductibles, so you have to meet your deductible each time your pet has an accident or gets sick. This is huge cost savings for you, and just one of the reasons that Healthy Paws pet insurance reviews are the best, 4 years in a row.

Healthy Paws allows you to choose the deductible that works the best of you and your needs.  Deductibles can be set at $100, $250, and $500 (the highest).

Therefore, if you choose the $100 deductible you’ll get a higher payout per incident, but you are going to be paying a higher monthly premium as well.  It just depends on your needs and what you anticipate for your dog or cat in the coming year.

What Is The Cost Of Healthy Paws?

Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced plans when you take into account that they have no limits of any kind and offer a customized payout percentage and deductible model.

The company also offers a variety of different discounts, including special rates for members of AARP, AAA, Costco and more!

Some of the other groups that they give a 10% lifetime discount are the following: Animal Welfare Volunteers, Association or Alumni Organizations, membership groups such as AAA, AARP, and Costco, and Military service.

They offer a 15 % lifetime discount for employer sponsored plans.

The average starting premium for dogs is $32.80 and for cats is $17.19.  Of course, it depends on other variables such as your dog or cat’s age, where you live and the breed.  And, which policy you choose.

Claims Process

Healthy Paws is one of the only pet insurance companies to fully automate its claims process online.

To file a claim, you simply visit the claims portal website or download the app on your smartphone. They have a high claims approval rating and fast turnaround time for reimbursements.

Healthy Paws pet insurance is the most reliable partner to help you pay for your pet’s health care.

Enrollment & Waiting Period

Healthy Paws starting age for pets is eight weeks and older.  They do have an upper age of coverage which is 13 years old.

Healthy Paws has a 15 day waiting period for accidents and illnesses. The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months.

Healthy Paws pet insurance requires a full physical exam of your pet by a licensed veterinarian in order to be eligible for coverage.

No additional diagnostic testing such as x-rays or blood work is required. The timeline of this exam will depend on your pet’s age at the time of enrollment.

For pets younger than 6 you’ll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws does not require any medical records or proof of enrollment exam before submitting your first claim. When you file your first claim, they will then need a copy of your pet’s full medical history, including documentation of the enrollment exam.

What Do Healthy Paws Customers Say?

Consumers Advocate Rating: 9.8/10 (609 Healthy Paws reviews from customers)

“Healthy Paws is the best pet insurance, hands down”

healthy paws consumer reviewHealthy Paws has been amazing to have for my two-year-old puppy, who has had his share of medical mishaps. The peace of mind I have knowing that my dog is protected is wonderful, and I recommend Healthy Paws to every pet parent I meet. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my dog.

“Wonderful Pet Insurance”

healthy paws customer ratingsI’ve never reviewed any insurance company before. But Healthy Paws has been so good to my accident-prone German Shepherd that I had to write this. They respond to claims immediately and pay everything as promised. Such a relief dealing with a company who treats my dog’s health as the highest priority.

According to customer reviews of Healthy Paws pet insurance, 9 out of 10 pet owners who purchase a policy are very satisfied with their coverage and with the customer service. Among the large volume of reviews of Healthy Paws, here are a few typical comments.

Healthy Paws took great care of my Golden Retriever.

Everything from the conduct of the attendants to the review and processing of customers’ information is handled with professionalism and a minimum of hassles.

Thank you, Healthy Paws, for coming through for my puppy’s emergency.

Healthy Paws pet insurance has been recognized over and over as the very best. It offers extensive coverage, with unlimited benefits for your pet’s lifetime, unlike just about every other pet insurance provider.

Healthy Paws was a breeze to set up and easier to deal with for claims.

Healthy Paws’ app, website, and email and phone support make it easy to access profiles and to receive the help you need with your policy and your claims. Thanks to the company’s flexible hours, there are also plenty of opportunities to get in touch with their representatives. The one drawback seems to be that the mobile app is only available to Apple users.

Reimbursement for my Dachshund’s $3400 surgery took just 3 weeks.

The process of filing a claim couldn’t be easier. Either fill out the short, easily accessible form, take a snapshot of the invoices and submit them through the app, or alternatively send scans of the invoices through email. After that, the claims are processed as quickly as possible.

Healthy Paws gives back through its charitable foundation.

Healthy Paws’ Every Quote Gives HopeTM program sponsors animal shelters and related organizations so that they can better take care of the animals, including medical care. Not surprisingly, this charity has been a huge hit with pet lovers.

Their policies are easy to understand and coverage is flexible.

The fact that the reimbursement level and deductibles can be adjusted to meet individual preferences is a big advantage; with Healthy Paws, flexibility is a given.

Conclusions about Healthy Paws

Pretty much everyone agrees that Healthy Paws pet insurance is among the very best, as is shown by a customer review rating of 9.8/10. With unlimited benefits and quick and easy claims processing, it is easy to see why.

Healthy Paws Gives Back

A portion of your monthly premium benefits their Foundation, which donates a significant portion of the company’s profits to provide medical care for homeless pets.

Steve Siadek, the company’s founder, spoke with us for almost an hour to answer all of our questions about Healthy Paws. Prior to founding the company, Steve managed a no-kill animal shelter. His energy and compassion for helping animals is reflected in the outstanding Healthy Paws reviews from customers and veterinarians.

Healthy Paws Highlights

  • Rated #1 in 2013, 2014, 2015, & 2016
  • The only pet insurance to offer unlimited lifetime coverage with an annual deductible
  • Profits benefit the Healthy Paws Foundation that provides vet care for homeless animals

Healthy Paws vs Trupanion

When we reviewed Healthy Paws vs Trupanion, we found that they have similar coverage. However, there are a few differences between their policies, and they all affect cost.

Deductibles

Winner: Healthy Paws

Healthy Paws has an annual deductible. Trupanion has a per-condition deductible. What does this mean? Here is a simple breakdown:

  • Annual deductible: you pay one deductible per year
  • Per-condition deductible: you pay one deductible per accident or illness

For example:

In March, your puppy chews up a toy and swallows a piece of rubber that must be surgically removed (ouch!). Then in June, he gets an ear infection (poor guy!).

If your puppy is covered by Healthy Paws and you chose a $250 deductible when you enrolled, you would meet your $250 deductible for the toy accident surgery and have a $0 deductible for the ear infection and anything else that happens that year.

If you enrolled in Trupanion and chose a $250 deductible, you would have a $250 deductible for the surgery, a $250 deductible for the ear infection, and a $250 deductible for any other accident or illness your puppy has. These add up fast!

Our Healthy Paws pet insurance reviews factor in how much you save on deductibles compared to other companies. That’s why we rate them #1.

Price

Winner: Healthy Paws

Another important difference between Healthy Paws and Trupanion is price. We looked at sample quotes from Healthy Paws vs Trupanion to compare monthly premium prices.

For a 3 year old, neutered Lab living in southern California ($250 deductible and 90% reimbursement):

  • Healthy Paws cost: $56.70/month
  • Trupanion cost: $105.19/month

That’s almost double the cost for the exact same options! And the extra cost doesn’t get you or your pet any additional benefit, because Healthy Paws coverage is better than Trupanion.

Coverage

Winner: Healthy Paws

Despite the huge price discrepancy, both companies offer similar coverage. But there is one key difference that may be essential for some pet parents: complementary medicine coverage.

Healthy Paws coverage includes alternative treatments, like acupuncture and physical therapy, at no extra charge. Alternative care comes standard with every Healthy Paws pet insurance policy.

Trupanion also covers alternative care but only if you add the “Complementary and Recovery Care Rider” to your policy. In the example of the 3 year old Lab that we used earlier, the optional alternative care feature would increase the monthly premium to $118.65.

As you can see, the cost savings of Healthy Paws vs Trupanion are significant. These 3 major cost differences are another reason why Healthy Paws pet insurance reviews are consistently the highest in the industry.

Questions About Healthy Paws Pet Insurance?

Where Do I Find Healthy Paws Promo Codes And Discounts?

There are several ways to save, including discounts for AAA members, friends, and family of existing members, and multiple pet savings. We offer a Healthy Paws promo code link that gives you 10% off the cost of your policy for as long as you have it!

What Does Healthy Paws Cover?

Any illness, accident, or injury is covered by Healthy Paws insurance. Surgery, hospital visits, medications, blood tests, x-rays, and other life-saving medical treatments are all paid for with Healthy Paws coverage.

Are There Any Types Of Limits On Coverage?

Healthy Paws pet insurance reviews are highest because there are no annual or lifetime limits on coverage. You can submit unlimited claims for any dollar amount, as long as your pet is enrolled. Like all pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws does not cover pre-existing conditions.

Are Hereditary And Congenital Conditions Covered?

Congenital conditions are birth defects and hereditary conditions passed down from your pet’s parents. These conditions can be expensive and difficult to treat, and may not show up until your pet is into adulthood. Healthy Paws coverage has no restrictions on congenital and hereditary health coverage. There is a standard 365 day waiting period for hip dysplasia.

What Is Not Covered?

Healthy Paws policies don’t cover routine care and regular veterinarian visits. Flea prevention, heartworm treatment, dental care, and behavioral modification are examples of excluded treatments. Excluding preventative care keeps the cost of insurance low, and cost is just one of the reasons why Healthy Paws reviews are consistently the best.

How Does My Pet Qualify For Coverage?

If your pet is under six years old, a copy of its most recent veterinary visit is all that is required. For pets six years and older, a veterinary examination performed during the past 30 days will be needed. If you don’t have the necessary veterinary records, you will need to have your pet examined before being approved for coverage.

How Do I Contact Healthy Paws?

How Do I Cancel My Coverage?

You may cancel your policy anytime by calling customer service at 1-855-898-8991.

How Do I Get A Quote?

Instantly get your free pet insurance quote from Healthy Paws and you’ll also activate an instant lifetime discount if you choose to enroll.

Does Healthy Paws Have An App?

Yes, Healthy Paws offers a free mobile app that lets you submit claims, update photos, update billing information, check the status of claims and review your policy. You can download the Healthy Paws App for iOS or get it on Google Play.

What About Customer Complaints?

Healthy Paws reviews from real customers are mostly singing their praise. However, we did find a few negative Healthy Paws reviews. On Rip Off Report, one customer had trouble canceling his policy.

Other customers complained about conditions not being covered or reimbursements being refused because they were pre-existing.

As you would for yourself and your family, you absolutely need to get insurance for your pets! It will help you out tremendously in the long run. Your pet is an investment and is a part of the family. It only makes sense to try to take care of it as you would anyone else.

We wholly agree, Beth! We also agree on the massive benefits of therapy. One of our dogs has gotten laser therapy for pain in his neck. He looks like he’s getting the most sublime massage during the procedure – and always returns from treatments bouncing like a happy ping-pong ball all over the place. Big thumb’s up to therapy of all sorts!

I agree- it is the Cadillac of insurance plans. My cat Buddy is middle aged, I never know when something might come up, and it’s just good to have coverage. Learned the hard way that there are a host of issues that can arise over the course of a pet’s life.

I wouldn’t let my Daisy go a day without her Healthy Paws pet insurance! I’ve definitely taken more out of the pot from Healthy Paws than I’ve paid in. That’s why I’m taking the time to write this review. They’ve saved me a ton of money even for the little things that happen to her like ear infections or allergies. She even had her ACL tear repaired and the surgery was over $5,000. Whatever you do, whichever plan you decide to go with, you need to be sure that surgery is included in the coverage You do not want to end up in the veterinary hospital and realize then that your pet isn’t covered. Healthy Paws is great for specialist coverage and allows you to take your pet to special doctors like cardiologists or oncologists for canine cancer. If I had to pay out of pocket for the orthopedic expert alone, that would have cost me a few hundred dollars — per visit.

I’m considering purchasing insurance for my pets. I have older pets, 3 cats and a dog, that haven’t had many medical problems, but I know that will possibly change as they get older. The Healthy Paws insurance plan has high reimbursement rates with very reasonable annual deductibles which is very important to me. The fact that any illness, accident, or injury is covered is a very compelling reason to purchase a policy.

I’m glad that the company donates some of its profits to for the medical care of homeless pets. It shows a real commitment to helping animals. That’s the kind of compassion that other insurance companies are lacking and helps me make the decision to contact them.

Excellent comment, Jerry! We agree it’s def. important to look at what company offers as well as company as whole to make the best decision. Donating to animal issues always gets a gold star in our book. Thanks for sharing factors in your decision-making process that’s sure to help others also weigh options just as carefully.

Our Newfoundland was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and has needed some incredibly expensive surgeries and treatment. At every stage, Healthy Paws have been incredible. Vet bills are crazy enough but everything seems to cost a lot more when you have a 140 pound dog. If it wasn’t for Healthy Paws I would have gone broke trying to pay for his treatment.I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Yaay! Linda – and Yaay! Healthy Paws. So wonderful to hear Healthy Paws has come through for your (very big!) baby. We hear ya on things costing MUCH more with bigger dogs. Our biggest weighed in at 120 lbs – and we loved every ounce of him. And yes, his treatments were on the pricey side.
Know it would be the same with a Newfoundland. What a fabulous breed! Thanks for recommendation, which weighs in heavily for helping others make best decision.

Wow, I’m blown away by the pricing and the plans on Healthy Paws. I really appreciate everything they offer in terms of alternative care, because running with any dog carries the risk of injuries. Especially the hydro-therapy is amazing for injuries related to sports like Frisbee, fly ball, agility, and running. Also, there’s no limit. What a terrific program and I’m so glad this page is here to help us walk through the maze of choosing a plan.

The golden retriever and puppies in this post are so! It warms my heart to know that Healthy Paws was founded by someone who truly cares about animals instead of someone looking to make money, like many money-hungry CEOs today. I think it’s amazing that they donate money to charity too! Because they cover so much, I think it’s okay that flea prevention and similar are excluded, those are not very costly usually and the rest of the coverage makes up for it!

Reading that alternative care like massages is included makes me so happy, I want my pets to feel good and happy and healthy. They really won my heart over when I read that Healthy Paws doesn’t put restrictions on congenital and hereditary coverage, some people don’t know to read up on a breed before you welcome it into your home and learn the hard way. It’s so great that just because the breed they were born as, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get taken care of the right way.

We know that alternative treatments can be so beneficial for humans, so it makes sense that our pets would benefit as well. But in truth, I had never thought about this before. It falls under what I would consider preventative care, even though it’s helpful once a condition has already developed.

When my in-laws’ dog had gotten older, he developed arthritis. He could barely walk and the pain was obvious. I don’t think acupuncture was even considered because they probably didn’t know about it. It probably could have improved the quality of his life before he died.

This sounds like an awesome company – and I love that the co-founder/CEO spent so much time answering your questions. The fact that they donate profits to care for homeless pets shows how much they love animals, and I think that’s awesome.

Healthy Paws appears to be the insurance that I’m looking for. I’m not too concerned about annual vet visits but I am thinking that as my dog (Tommy) gets older, I may need to get some insurance to cover some unexpected needs that may arise. I’m a big proponent of alternative therapies for humans and I’ve just started looking into them for animals and it’s definitely something that I want to pursue for Tommy as he ages. I can also appreciate the low deductible amounts that are available for coverage. That’s a nice option that could fit within any budget. I’m definitely getting a quote from Healthy Paws.

I’ve learned the hard way that pet insurance is a MUST when you have pets. They are just like children – they could get hurt or something unexpected can happen. My Pomeranian Shih tzu was hurt in his eye while he was at the groomer and had to get surgery – All I’m saying is that HealthyPaws is worth EVERY SINGLE penny. You get the best medical care, lots of coverage and knowing that the founders truly care about animals ensures me that my pet is always in good hands. This is the only pet insurance that I’ve seen that covers your pet for their lifetime. Not only do they offer the best prices, but they offer reimbursements and they have great annual deductibles – so come on! What else could you possibly want?

Pet insurance is an essential things that we could get if we really love and care for our pets. My dog is like a family to me and I care for him as I care for my friends. He is loyal and sweet so when he got sick, I spent huge amount for his medication. If I have pet insurance that time, I’m sure I could save a lot. I’m looking now for the best program that I could get.

But after discussing it with some friends who had been in a similar situation, I realized that it could be very beneficial for our dog’s health. We didn’t have the insurance coverage at the time, and now I wish I had known about Healthy Paws! I love seeing plans with alternative therapy coverage because it did wonders for our dog. Surgery, hospital visits, medications, blood tests, x-rays, and other life-saving medical treatments. It is a good thing that the policy covers these benefits. I thinks this is the best policy ever. When we adopted our dog, Smokey, from the shelter we thought his mixed-breed heritage (lab/Chow mix) meant he was going to be exceptionally healthy. We didn’t bank on him being accident prone, though! In the first 6 months we took him to the vet 7 times. I can’t imagine NOT having Healthy Paws. Smokey had a severe UTI from the shelter, two eye infections caused by an eye injury that ultimately led to surgery, and a tick-borne illness. We chose the higher deductible ($500), but have had 90% of his costs covered thereafter. The insurance plan even covered an out of town emergency. We were drawn to the company because of their BBB grade, and have been very happy with the service received. We would love if preventative medications were covered, like heartworm or tick, but fortunately those aren’t too expensive. Ultimately, Smokey is our baby, and with all of his issues so far, we are very happy to have found Healthy Paws and their unlimited coverage in case his accident streak continues!

And looking at Free Alternative Care Coverage is and added advantage as well as this should come in handy when in time of need. i will pick Healthy Paws for a price of $35.55/month. As an owner of total of 2 kittens and 1 adult, maintaining with their emergency and their hospitalization fee takes quite a toll on me. One of my best cats died a while back. She was feverish and i just let her be, hoping she will get well again. After 2 – 3 days of fever, she started losing appetite, and then she became bedridden as half of her body was unable to move. That is when i realize she might be terminal. I rush to the hospital and the doctor said she had a heart attack and already paralyze waist down and was put to sleep the next day. With this, i become more conscious with the health of my entire pet. I would never miss to go to a doctor should my cats got sick. With this insurance, i just have to submit my claim and get reimburse. This is great.

Healthy Paws is truly an insurance company with integrity, which is more than I could normally hope for from any insurance company.

My husband and I adopted a 5-month old English Bulldog from a rescue (not our first bulldog, so we had an idea of what we were getting into)… Wrigley, poor thing, has been beset with quite a laundry list of maladies, many of which are due to poor breeding practices and are congenital (i.e. not likely to go away soon). Wrigley has been in and out of the hospital several times in the last year and a half, and has shown to be the happiest little trooper out there; as long as he wants to keep on and is happy about it, we’ll do what we can.

After just finding your site, I am finding that it is going to be more than helpful in my search for pet insurance. I really like the way you review the insurance companies and give them a star rating. That makes it easier for me to compare them side by side and find the right one for me.

Healthy Paws sounds like the best of the best! The fact that the reviews here are posted by a vet makes it even more appealing as I know that I will be getting useful information and I will be able to find a dependable pet insurance company for our cats. Healthy Paws is more expensive than we would like, but quality does cost money.

I want just the best for my dog. He really is my best friend. I am amazed that there is a full covered insurance which also allows me to try alternative methods to help him if he is in need. Massage therapy and underwater therapy sounds very innovative to me.

If I join this insurance and I have a 6 month old puppy that I just recently purchased from a breeder who was feeding her victor a brand that was too high in protein for her which caused a UTI. She was treated by my vet with antibiotics and when I took her back she still had a small amount of pylori (bacteria) with crystals. Will I still be covered for anything that has to do with her urinary tract or is this a preexisting as he said it was from her food which I changed not her system.

I had the insurance policy for one month, 80% coverage with hundred dollar deductible. I knew that their effective eligibility date was 15 days from signing up, but they did not say that that begins the day after you sign up. So about two weeks after he signed up, after I thought he passed the waiting period, he had some diarrhea, so I took him to the vet and had him seen, $300 charge. I had to wait two weeks to get an answer on my claim from Healthy Paws, and they said that he was not covered because his symptoms began one day before the waiting period expired! According to them, the coverage began on the day that I saw the vet (but he started having symptoms the night before), but I contested this because it was not clear. Plus, they were supposed to have a 30 day moneyback guarantee and I was canceling my policy within that time period. But guess what, that is only if you don’t file a claim. In other words, you only get all your money back if you never even tested out their service AND cancel the first month you have it… makes a whole lot of sense, right?? So, I got nothing for my trouble, I had to pay $54 nonrefunded for nothing, plus I had to pay the full vet fee because he got his first symptoms one day before they said the period ended. Incredibly petty and bad company. Don’t deal with them.

In reviewing several insurance companies over the last few months. I am considering Healthy Paws for our dog and cat. I feel it would be the right choice. Those other insurance companies do not offer the benefits Healthy Paws does. Healthy Paws is considered the #1 insurance, A+ with the BBB, this is very important in my decision.

I love that with Healthy Paws has an annual deductible, so I don’t have to meet my deductible each time my dog gets sick. And the fact that they have coverage for hereditary and congenital conditions is amazing! I also love that alternative care is included in the insurance…I wish I knew about this earlier because I paid an arm and a leg for hydrotherapy for my dog!

If a pet has been diagnosed with a condition but not treated for it, will treatments for that condition be considered pre-existing and therefore not covered?

I agree- it is the Cadillac of insurance plans. My dog Buddy is old aged, I never know when something might come up, and it’s just good to have coverage. Learned the hard way that there are a host of issues that can arise over the course of a pet’s life.

Hi everyone, healthy paws has been the biggest lifesaver ever. I have only been with them a year and they have now covered two major treatments (surgery and extensive medical testing) costing at least $6000 which they covered 80% of plus a bunch of other random visits I’ve had to have. They are super nice and so fast at processing especially if it’s for expensive things like surgery which they can cover up front in most instances. A big shout out to Shelby and Nikki who work in customer service. They were so nice to deal with and so has everyone else I just can’t remember their names lol. I seriously wish I could be insured myself by healthy paws instead of the human insurance options because I am far more impressed with them haha – Sophie T

I am so lucky I have Healthy Paws insurance. Both of my pups are covered, but my girl Anya has had many health issues, while Jimmeny my boy has been very healthy. Anya has had many orthopedic issues, an immune mediated blood disorder, and recently she ate a bone that perforated her intestine and she became septic. She spent a week and a half in the ICU and Healthy paws paid for 90% of her $14,000 medical bill. I hope that is the last of her health disasters, but I am sure glad Healthy Paws has our back. Healthy Paws is the best. I had them for at least 8 years and used them this past year when my dog became ill. They covered 90 percent of the cost for his 2 surgeries, multiple tests and sadly his euthanasia. All of this was just about $10,000. I have compared them with other companies and they are by far superior. I am definitely going to use them again.

I am extremely disappointed in the recent denial of a claim for my dog’s PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment for elbow dysplasia. I reached out to Healthy Paws to confirm coverage for various orthopedic treatments and was clearly told by the representative that treatments for dysplasia were covered with the exception of some natural remedies and herbal supplements, and in digging deeper I was told that some of the natural remedies were actually covered because they have been found to be beneficial. The representative was very clear that the only exclusions were some natural remedies, so I moved forward with the very expensive PRP injection for my dog. Upon submission, I my claim was rejected because I was told that PRP is considered “experimental”. A therapy that has been used since the 70’s in humans and for almost 10 years in dogs, and has been deemed, in study after study, a highly beneficial treatment for various forms of dysplasia in dogs, is considered “experimental”? That is ridiculous. Yet chiropractic medicine, acupuncture, and some herbal remedies have definitive results and are covered? The policy is terrible and the representative who relayed the information to me misrepresented the coverage. Healthy Paws has done nothing to remedy the situation and claims that they cannot reimburse me for any part of the procedure because they can’t change their coverage. When I asked about reimbursement because their representative misrepresented the coverage, they denied my request. My other two dogs are on Pet Plan and I’ve never had an issue like this. I work in the animal field and will never recommend Healthy Paws to anyone again.

Does Healthy Paws cover any dental outside cleanings?

Lisa Wise 07/14/2018 at 1:44 am

I learned today that one thing was NOT at all clear about their coverage – they do NOT cover the cost of the vet/office visit for an emergency visit. The Q&A above says “Healthy Paws policies don’t cover routine care and regular veterinarian visits. Flea prevention, heartworm treatment, dental care, and behavioral modification are examples of excluded treatments. Excluding preventative care keeps the cost of insurance low, and cost is just one of the reasons why Healthy Paws reviews are consistently the best.” It doesn’t tell you that if you take your pet to the vet for an emergency visit, they won’t cover the office visit portion. In some cases, like ours, this was 3/4 of the cost of our trip. So, if you subtract that from the amount covered and then the 20% deductible, I was not very pleased to see how little they actually applied to my deductible for the year. Yes, I know it’s still probably worthwhile if a major health issue arises, but I can’t help but think maybe I should just put my money into a savings account instead. Make sure you understand what the policy covers before enrolling!

Overall healthy paws has been good but the most recent claim was unjustly denied. Our male dog needed to be neutered (at 5 years of age) because of a prostate issue that was causing discomfort and peeing blood. This issue arises in maybe 50% of intact males and most have no symptoms. Very obviously the neutering at this point was NOT elective or preventative but medically necessary. They refused to cover it which is ridiculous. The vet notes clearly stated this procedure was medically required. I understand that normally neutering is considered preventative and not covered. Preventative of what is unclear but that is a different story. (the best time to neuter a male dog is never).
So, Healthy paws is basically telling me that if neutering were required to save the dogs life they wouldn’t cover it.
