PinPawsLogoOur grade: C+

Pin Paws Pet Care is a pet tracking device that allows pet parents to easily track their dog (or cat) if they get lost.

It’s essentially an ID tag that your dog wears and if he runs away or gets lost, the tag can then be scanned and it will have information on how to reach you as well anything else that might be important or relevant to your dog.

When the tag is scanned, you will even get a text notification of your dog’s location.

Pin Paws Pet Care teamed up with PetFirst to offer pet insurance as well as their tracking device.

PetFirst has all of its policies underwritten by the New Hampshire Insurance Company (NHIC).

Pin Paws pet insurance does not offer all of the plans that PetFirst provides with only two different plans offered and no wellness plan options.

How Does Pin Paws Pet Insurance Work?

Pin Paws Pet Insurance, through PetFirst, offers comprehensive illness and accident coverage in their four plans.

Pin Paws Pet Insurance plans include the following:

  • All Illnesses
  • Cancer
  • Accidents
  • Prescription discount
  • Alternative Therapy
  • Hereditary Conditions
  • Chronic Illness & Conditions
  • Diagnostics
  • Surgery
  • Hospitalization
  • Emergencies
  • Cruciate Ligament Tears or Issues–after 12 months.

Hereditary & Congenital Conditions

Breed-specific conditions that are also referred to as heredity and congenital conditions will be covered with Pin Paws plans as long as the particular condition is already there when you enroll your pet and is then called pre-existing.

Holistic & Alternative Therapy

Pin Paws Insurance includes alternative and holistic therapy in their four different plans.

Some of the treatments include the following:

  • Chiropractic Care
  • Acupuncture
  • Reiki
  • Rehabilitation

Benefit Limit Choices

Pin Paws offers two choices of benefit limits: $2,000 and $5,000.

Some of the better pet insurance plans such as Healthy Paws offers unlimited benefits.

By having lower benefit limits, it can help keep the pricing down.  But, if your cat or dog is seriously hurt or very ill, the medical bills could become costly and neither coverage amount would be sufficient.

Reimbursement Method

Pin Paws offers only one reimbursement level of 90%.

While that is a generous rate of reimbursement, most pet insurance plans offer reimbursement choices from 70% up to 90%.

Deductible Options

Pin Paws offers one annual deductible choice of $100.

Similarly, one deductible is just not enough of a choice when plans like Embrace, Petplan and all the others give you many choices of deductibles

How Much Does Pin Paws Pet Insurance Cost?

The cost of Pin Paws is a little more expensive than others we have reviewed that give you more options of coverage although it does include the Pin Paws Tag Id if that is of interest to you.

However, they spell out the exact pricing which is certainly good to know.

Frequently Asked Questions about Pin Paws Pet Insurance

Why enroll in Pin Paws Plans when you can go straight to PetFirst?

There really is only one reason to sign up for Pin Paws Pet Insurance rather than PetFirst and that is that you already own a Pin Paws Pet Id tag or would like to get one.

While the pet insurance options are very limited with only 2 choices, you do get the added value of the tracking id and their prescription service.  It just makes having all your pet policies all under one site.

Does Pin Paws Pet Insurance offer wellness plans?

No, they don’t.  While PetFirst does offer a few different wellness plans, Pin Paws doesn’t.  If that is of interest to you, then you should sign up with PetFirst directly.

Which alternative treatments are offered?

When you have an older pet or injured pets, alternative therapy treatments are less invasive forms of therapy.

Some of the different therapies offered are the following: acupuncture, homeopathic therapy reiki, physical therapy and even hydrotherapy.

Are there any age limits with Pin Paws Pet Insurance?

No.  Dogs and cats of any age can be enrolled in their pet insurance.  Because they offer two different pricing plans, the cost for an older pet is actually very reasonable.

In fact, whether you have a puppy or older dog, the pricing is exactly the same.

Are there many exclusions on coverage?

Pin Paws Pet Insurance, like most others, won’t cover pre-existing conditions that have occurred, pregnancy related conditions, injuries from neglect or any type of elective procedure.

They also don’t offer any preventative care that is typically offered under a wellness plan.

Final Thoughts on Pin Paws Pet Insurance

While Pin Paws pet insurance options are very limited, if you already have their Pet Id tracking device, it could be a benefit to enroll in pet insurance through them.

Due to their lack of choices, though, it would make much more sense to enroll in PetFirst directly so you have more choices.

Take a look at Pin Paws Pet Insurance and see if their device and/or insurance is of interest to you.

You can also go directly to PetFirst to see how their pricing works.
