Can Dogs Eat Almonds?

Almonds are a favorite nut for many of us to snack on.   And for good reason.

Almonds are a great source of vegetable protein with the right kind of good, saturated fat and are low in calories.   They taste great too!

As you pop an almond, you might think you can just toss one to your pup to share.

No big deal, right?

Well, it kind of is.

Almonds are NOT Safe For Dogs

can dogs eat almonds

No. They really aren’t.  Almonds are a food item that you shouldn’t share with dogs.

While almonds may have many benefits for us humans, dogs should not eat almonds.

If your pup happens to have a bite of an almond or even a small one, it shouldn’t harm your dog, but this is not a nut you want to share with any dog.

Almonds aren’t as toxic as some other nuts but they can be very hard for a dog to digest them.

If your dog does consume too many almonds, consult a veterinarian immediately. And with the high costs of veterinary care, it would really help to have pet insurance.

We recommend Healthy Paws as the #1 pet health insurance provider!

Why Almonds Are Toxic to Dogs

Almonds are a bad food choice for dogs because they can be hard on a dog’s stomach and digestion.

Even just a couple of almonds might cause your dog to have mild stomach irritation or even diarrhea.

If your dog downs too many almonds, it can even cause gastroenteritis due to its high fat content which can be serious if left untreated.

Dogs, particularly small ones, can easily choke on almonds due to its shape which is harder to swallow than, for example, a peanut.

If your dog swallows an almond too quickly, it can become blocked in your pup’s intestines, windpipe, and even esophagus.

If any of these were to occur, it could be fatal if left untreated or your pup might need emergency surgery.

Of course, flavored or salted almonds are even worse.  If your dog accidentally eats too many, the salt and seasoning can cause not only an upset stomach but water retention.

I guess you get the picture by now.  No almonds for your dog!
